Rabble Diary 2005

8 January 2005 - Bonrif Ceilidh Spot

Jane is also a member of Bonrif, a local celidh band, who were performing at the Guildhall in Lichfield on Saturday evening and the Rabble were invited along to do a spot in the interval.
Although a little short notice at a tricky time of year there was a good turn out for this local event and the side performed a few border dance and a clog dance. Musicians were a little short on the ground but a by making Jane play in her interval and recruiting a "wandering minstral" it was covered.
It all seemed to go down very well with several people commenting how they enjoyed the display.

27 February 2005 - Full Practice

This is something we have done in recent years to give us a chance to put on kit and dance as if we were out on a booking, as well as a reminder of what it's like to dance and play dressed up, it is also an opportunity to practice getting on and off and the introductions. Well that was the plan but due to a combination of circumstances there were a lot of the side were unavailable, so it was really a practice in kit.
A few solo clog dances were practiced and a few border dances which didn't require too many participants were peformed.
It was an early pub day though.

5 March 2005 - DERT

This year's DERT (Dancing England Rapper Tournament) was held in Preston and it was very good.
There is no doubt that Rapper is increasing in popularity and with a record number of teams entering this years event was of a slightly differnt format. The pub performancers were still there but there were two "tours" which were scored independently. The winners of each tour were then scored by the other tour's judges in the final showcase dances. The sneaky bit being the teams weren't told who was being scored until afterwrads.
We didn't win but put on an excellent display in the finals and had a good time.
After the event it was announced that a Sword Dances Union was being formed to promote Sword dancing as it was felt this aspect of traditional dance was treated as a poor relation by the other organisations. We will have to wait and see what develops.

19 March 2005 - Fig and Date Fayre

After a false start two years ago the Rabble finally made this event which was held a little more locally in Long Eaton for 2005.
Dancers were a little thin on the ground but luckily ? due to the layout of the venue (long and thin by the side of a canal) there were only two dance spots and time constraints meant we were only able to perform one dance at each of them.
We extended that slightly to mean one border and one clog dance at each spot so everyone who turned up had a chance to perform.
We then went on to take part in some interesting games with negotiable rules where soft fruit was used as a ball.
It was a good event with excellent cheap beer with most of those who attended enjoying a social chilli at a local members house afterwards.
